The pre-defense
The pre-defense session for the six Master Students of Communication (Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages-TCSOL) took place in meeting room B1-314 on March 24, 2017. The session was hosted by Professor An Ran. Professor Liu Cheng, Professor Shan Yunming, Associate Professor Cui Shuhui, and Associate Professor He Jijun participated in the pre-defense session as the members of review committee. Master Students of Journalism and Communication (TCSOL), Class 2015 and Class 2016, also attended the session.
At her opening speech, Professor An Ran, Dean of our school, pointed out that the pre-defense was vital to the essay writing and the application for the Master’s degree. Then, the six applicants made their presentations based on the subject choice and significance, literature review, data analysis, conclusions, new insights and creative achievements. The supervisors of the board commented their on the presentation afterwards. Despite being a rehearsal, the pre-defense was conducted in accordance with review procedure and standards of the formal defense session. The purpose of this activity was to help the applicants discover any problems that might need to resolved, to develop their ability to make spontaneous responses to queries about their writings, and to ensure that the applicants might excellently complete their Master’s dissertation and approved graduation defense.
At her closing remarks, Professor An Ran pointed out that students need to elevate communication with their supervisors and actively listen to their suggestions. She also indicated that supervisors help students to clarify the direction of their study.
