The Opening Ceremony of 2015 Chinese Language & Culture Camp of Lancaster University in SCUT was Successfully Held


In the afternoon of October, 8, the opening ceremony of 2015 Students’ Chinese Language & Culture Camp of Lancaster University was successfully held in the north campus. Prof. Hu Yongjian, Deputy Dean of SIE attended the ceremony, as well as 28 students from the Lancaster China Catalyst Program, members of the Lancaster China Catalyst Program Vice-Chancellor’s Office. The ceremony was hosted by Ms. Chen Dongmei.

Prof. Hu Yongjian addressed the ceremony with an opening theme speech, he express his warm welcome to the students in Lancaster China Catalyst Program. Firstly, he gave an introduction of SCUT, SIE and the curriculum and activities of the induction week.Afterwards, Mr. Huang Win, Ms. Liao Petula and Ms. He Dongni from the Lancaster China Catalyst Program Vice-Chancellor’s Office respectivelygave the introduction of themselves and their roles as well as the arrangement after the induction week, they also praised the expertise in SCUT and express the wish for a successful induction week. In the speech of the representative of the students, Lucy Binfield and James Balshaw, shared the excitement to the beautiful weather in Guangzhou and were thankful for the great arrangement and the helps form Chinese volunteers.

Afterwards, Prof. Hu Yongjian issued the badges of SCUT to the students, symbolizing that they have become a member of SCUT.

The “Catalyst Program”, was launched in 2014. It is a cooperation program between Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology (GDST) and Lancaster University, which aims to promote joint efforts in research and developments in IT, LED, Biology, New materials, Clean Energy Vehicles, High-Tech manufacturing,energy saving, and environmental protection. In October, 2015, the Catalyst Program is sending graduate students to China for a 6-month-internship. Prior to their internship, they will begin with a one week induction at South China University of Technology (SCUT), along with 3 months of Chinese language and culture courses to help them better settle in China.This program will serve as a precursor to the future cooperation between SCUT and the Lancaster University.
