Prof. LIU Lening, Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, Columbia University in the City of New York, was appointed as Visiting Professor by our school for a new round. He gave two lectures on June, 10th and 11st. Prof. LIU Chen was the host and over 200 audiences attended the lectures.
The first lecture talked about "how to train instructors for teaching Chinese as a second language (TCSL)". Prof. LIU pointed out that a good instructor should have a wide knowledge of linguistics, Chinese and language teaching theories. A rich experience of practical teaching as well as the capability of applying theories to practices was also required. Chinese instructors should find balance between teaching skills and academic studies, know how to manger the program and how to train later instructors. The most important thing is to have a passion for this work.
In his second lecture, Prof. LIU, as the dean of a Confucius Institute, introduced his experiences on "how to apply linguistic theories to Chinese teaching practices". Prof. LIU believed that grammar was the generalization of language using but not a set of fixed or self-consistent rules. So the changes, which were brought by users' creativity, should be treated more positively.
